Week 12 Story: Caleb and his Fortune

There once was a grandmaster named Caleb. He was the wisest man in that land. Not only was he so smart he was also ridiculously rich that Mansu Musa would have looked like a simple peasant. Caleb knew that even with his vast wealth he would not live forever. He wanted to do something that would allow only the purest and kind heart person get the wealth. Caleb decided to have a contest in which people could have a chance at gaining his fortune.

Caleb decided that he would make a challenging course that would cause people to use teamwork not only to make it out. He thought this was the best way to make it go to a real team who would not be overtaken by greed.

"Woah! Check out what the paper says," Alex said to Sebastian. Alex slid the paper over to Sebastian.

"ZOO-WEE-MAMA!" Sebastian screamed. "Someone is going to have a chance to win all of Caleb the Great's treasure!"

The men could hardly believe it. They had been looking for a break and a chance to start making money, but there weren't a lot of jobs for survivalist in this economy. This was the exact break their team, The Great Explorers, had been looking for. The men had been longtime friends that wanted nothing more than to become rich.

The announcement said that in three weeks the great arena would open. Only one team would be able to leave alive with the treasure. (I never said Caleb didn't enjoy a little bit of a bloodbath sometimes!) The course would test the best of the best explorers, survivalist, and fighters. Over half the military was going to try to take part in it. After all, the best killers should have the best chances of survival. The games would be broadcasted. If no one was able to recover the treasure in one week the whole thing would be destroyed by a nuclear bomb. Meaning everyone still left in the area would die also. The only way out was to use the key found in the treasure chest.

TBC....

People running at Caleb's great treasure!

Author's notes: I based this story off of the story of the Robber's and the Treasure. I wanted to show that greed would affect even the sanest of people. The idea of being that rich would cause our characters to turn on each other even though they had been working together for their whole lives. I also used Caleb as someone who was not affected by wealth and was sane and calm like a Buddha.

  1. That reminds me of this one time my really rich neighbor from West Africa went on a Hajj to show off how rich he was. That was a long time ago though, and I haven't seen or spoken to him since. I think he died a while back.

I do enjoy the fortnite setup, that was fun, although you should try integrating exposition into your main story. All my friends think its good, and that means it is good, and that you should try it.

  2. Hi Alex, I enjoyed reading your short story, Caleb and his fortune. Before I started reading the story I took notice of the Fortnite picture so first off I assumed it was going to have to do with something fortnite related haha. I like the concept of your story as it has a nice simple story line that is easy to follow along with. Caleb's vast wealth reminds me of Bill Gates. I know all of Bill Gates's wealth is going to charity when he dies but I wonder if someone in the real world like Bill Gates would ever do what Caleb did in your story?

  3. Alex,
What an interesting premise. It’s Hunger Games, Running Man, and Gladiator all wrapped in one. All of that certainly shares qualities that one might see in the Indian Epics. I wonder what makes anyone willing to engage in a bloodbath bent on the prize of wealth worthy of being deemed the purest and kind of heart person? I would love to see how that develops as you continue the story!
