Introduction to Alex Lagge A Computer Engineer

Hey everyone my name is Alex Lagge. I am a junior at ou. My major is computer engineering. Why did I choose that major? I find computers to be fascinating and one of the most important pieces of the future. After my undergrad, I want to pursue an MBA and data analysis master. Even though I'm a computer engineer, I am planning on not doing a whole lot in the engineering field and want to go work as a data analyst. That's the boring school stuff about me. My hobbies are all things sports. I wouldn't consider myself a stereotypical sports bro though. Even though I spend a lot of my time reading and watching sports, I like the strategies that go into sports and the data behind decisions. A quick example is how the NBA is going toward more 3's and layups/dunks because from an efficiency stand point they are the best shots to take. The sport I like more than the NBA is football. The NFL is the superior football league compared to college. Many people enjoy college football more; I find it to be quite bland and not as polished. Besides sports I like working out in my free time. I have started to get back into the gym after a decent hiatus during college. The feeling of completing a long workout is a completely different high that you don't get from anywhere else. It is very easy to track your progress in the gym by just looking at your numbers rise. Sure the time it takes for you to physically see change is a good while, but that waiting for the progress to show is what I find to be the most fun. I believe people are too concerned about getting the short term high in life that the truly great highs are missed out by people. A such choice is smoking weed or drinking when you have a lot to do. If you go for the short term high you miss out on the chance of having a great GPA when you graduate college which will feel way better than those many times. That's all about me if you have any questions feel free to leave a comment and a like!

  1. Hey Alex! It's cool to see a computer engineering student as I feel like those are a rare breed. My brother is actually computer science at OU and always wondered what the difference was, I just assumed it's a software vs hardware difference (maybe you can clear that up.) In regards to football strategies I just saw a math approach to the advantage of going for two when you are down 14 and it was really interesting to see how it was actually better for a team statistically to go for 2 if their conversion rate is over 40%. However, I am one of those people that likes college football more than the NFL and maybe because I like how unpolished it is. The traditions and high stakes of every game make it exciting for me, but everyone likes their own thing of course.

  2. I thought your introduction was really unique and interesting! To be honest, I have never been very much into sports, but your discussion of the analysis/strategies behind what goes on in the field made it a lot more interesting. Maybe some day I'll try to watch a football or basketball game and pay deeper attention to the strategy behind the coach's and player's decisions or reactions.

  3. Hi Alex,

WOW, I totally agree with your views on the highs of life, and you are right. Most people strive for short term highs and forget that there is a lifetime to go. Some college students forget that there is life after college. It is not like high school where after that you go to college since after college is the real world. I like that you gave so much thought into sports and the analytical aspects of it. Sports is not my area of interest but it is my sister's. Her dream job is to be a sports manager. I wish you the best on your studies.

  4. Hey Lagge! Nice introduction. I liked the part where you talked about working out. I myself have been lifting big recently. I started GOMAD, have you ever heard of it? It's a category of a larger mass-gaining technique known as Bloatmaxxing. Anyways, we should go to the gym sometime! I try to avoid the Huff, I prefer Guy Heaven on Classen, I can bring a friend every time I go so just feel free to hit me up man :)

  5. Hey Alex! I'm a mechanical engineering major! My brother does work in data analysis so I find that field fascinating. I have to say that's probably where our similarities end though, I virtually NEVER watch sports. I probably couldn't even tell you the names of 10 professional teams in the NBA and NFL combined. Oddly enough though, I went to a Thunder game the other night and got to sit like right next to the basket and that was quite a cool experience. I got to see some insane dunks and seeing those guys jump just put into perspective how good they really are.

  6. Data analysis and big data are going strong in education right now too, Alex! Sometimes it is really cool and exciting (I love how I can create a blog network with everybody's posts all coming together, and then I can do some text analysis to get a sense of what the class "vibe" is overall and how things are going)... and sometimes it is kind of scary too (all the robots reading student writing and giving so-called feedback: eeeek! not good!). Same way with computers and writing: I'm not impressed by the auto-writing of news articles by computers, but I love new computer-based tools for writing that humans can use. Have you looked at Twine yet? Maybe you will want to give that a try: it's a really cool programming language (simple, but powerful too!) for creating interactive story/games. I'm a Twine fan! More here: Twine Tech Tips. Maybe you'll give that a try this semester! :-)

  7. Hi Alex! I enjoyed reading a little about you and getting to know you a bit. I don't know many computer engineering majors, but I love that you know what you want to do and seem to be on track! I love watching sports and football is my absolute favorite. I enjoy both college football as well as the NFL. I think the best thing is watching the game and actually being there because it's a completely different environment when you get to cheer them on in person! I also love to workout. I love how good it makes me feel and it always gives me a sense of accomplishment! I'm always following different fitness accounts to try new workouts whenever I'm bored.

  8. Hi Alex,
I really like the design of your blog. Very easy to navigate and is soothing with your background choice. Your introduction was very interesting to read, especially how you broke down your love of sports into data analysis as well. To be honest, I prefer college football over NFL for the sheer fact that my friends and I actually share the same favorite team. I look forward to reading your stories!

  9. Hey Alex,
I enjoyed reading your introduction. I am not a computer engineer (quite the opposite) but I know a lot of them and your major in my opinion is so difficult and so crucial to our future. However, I can relate to the love of data and analyzing it. My graduate program is all about analyzing data about diseases and human health! I wish you the best in the future and for your graduate program.

  10. Hey Alex, I really liked the way you carried out your introduction. It was brief but to the point. I think its cool that you're studying computer engineering, you are definitely the first person with that major that I have met. I agree with you regarding delayed gratification. In the end the payout is a lot greater but sometimes it's hard to keep that in mind.

  11. Hi Alex! So nice to meet you! It’s really cool that you chose to major in computer engineering because of your fascination about computers. I do, too, believe that computers are a key factor in unlocking the future, with so many things already being relied on computers and technology. Have you always been interested in computers and with the way they work?

  12. Hi Alex!
I think that it is so cool that your major is computer engineering. You seem like you are a big numbers/ data person in just about every aspect of life; which I really admire! Numbers have never really been my strong suit (I haven't taken a math class since freshman year... I'm a senior). But I totally agree with you on the working out thing. It took me a while to enjoy working out, but now that I do it's a habit that I really enjoy. The feeling that you have after working out is truly incredible, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who feels the same way.

  13. Hi Alex!
Computer Engineering? Nice! I could never. I have not taken math since my junior year of high school, and me and my computer have a very basic relationship.

I love working out too! I just hate the huff so much I started working at another gym, so I could have a free membership elsewhere. It's terrible how expensive they can get. I really like to take classes so that always adds up the potential numbers when I would look at memberships.

  14. Hey Alex! First off, computer engineering, yikes. Anything relating to engineering just intimidates me haha. I'm a science major but math is not my strong suit, so good job for sticking to that! Regarding working out, I totally agree with you. This year my friends and I have signed up for HIIT classes and getting myself to wake up and go is a challenge every morning but now I am more excited for them than dreading them!

  15. Hey Alex.

I've been slowly getting into working out, but it's such an activity I had to do. I totally feel the high though after I feel I've accomplished a good workout, it's just really hard to bring myself to a mindset of wanting to complete a workout. I think it's ok for people to let loose and drink or smoke sometimes, as long as they have no studies or work to worry about the next day and they do it responsibly.

  16. Hi Alex,

It is great to meet ya! It is super cool that you are a computer engineering major. I wish I was more tech savvy with computers. It is funny how you love sports so much, my boyfriend is the exact same way. I prefer college football over NFL football simply because it is more relative to my life and collegiate experience. Maybe one day I will get more into pro sports. I also like working out. I definitely do not do it as much as I would like, but any bit counts! Have a great semester.

  17. Hey Alex! I would agree that doing any sort of physical exercise gives you an amazing high and is a feeling unlike anything else. As a ballet major, I am in the studio moving for about six hours a day; I have spent a great deal of my life chasing that “high” feeling. I think it’s really cool that you are so dedicated to sports, and particularly the analytical aspects of them, which most people probably never take the time to think about.

  18. Hi Alex! I find it really cool that you chose computer engineering as your degree! I have a friend who chose that as his major too! I haven't been able to workout much in college and its starting to catch up to me. Even though I don't go to the gym, I have participated in four full marathons while in college! I plan on doing the OKC Half Marathon with a friend at the end of April too! I also find it cool that you pay attention to the statistical side of sports too because not that many people care for it!

  19. Hi Alex. You like computers? I like computers too. I wonder if you could train a learning algorithm to generate convincing, nondescript, fictional biographies using the biographies of every version of this class ever taught. You should do that. It would be funny. Unfortunately, I lack the technical expertise required to generate such a program. Such is the tragedy of existence.

  20. Hi Alex, I enjoyed reading your introduction post. Interesting major to be in for the type of profession you sound most interested in, data analysis. I am surprised you are not taking on a business or MIS minor. I am minoring in business and have taken a few courses relating to data analytics. I feel like you would enjoy them! Since you are a computer engineer, do you find fun in building your own computers? And since you are computer engineer I gotta ask, hardware or software, haha? Didn't know if you were passionate about custom PCs. I know I want to build a custom PC sometime in my life just for fun, even though I have no need for one. Just think it would be a fun project!

  21. Alex,
What a great point of view towards the highs in life. I agree with you, if only more people valued long term results based on statistical analysis, we could all make this world a healthier, happier place to exist! As far as your hiatus from working out goes, good luck. You sound like someone who will have no problem getting back into the groove of a good work out.
